Stay Motivated During Your Quest for Better Health

Staying consistent with exercise can sometimes feel like a drag, right? You might feel like you're stuck in the same old routine, running on autopilot, or maybe you exercise alone and find it too easy to hit snooze instead of lacing up your sneakers. Perhaps you don’t even have a clear goal in mind, making it hard to stay focused and motivated.

Well, you're not alone! Here are some tips to keep your workouts fresh, fun, and motivating during your fitness journey:

1. Set a SMART Goal

Ever find yourself saying, “I want to lose weight” or “I want to get fit,” but not really knowing where to start? That’s where SMART goals come in.

Take this example: You want to lose 10 pounds. Here’s how to make it happen, SMART-style:

  • Specific: Instead of vaguely saying “I’ll lose 10 pounds,” get clear on how you’re going to do it. For example, “I will lose 10 pounds in 12 weeks by following the Canada Food Guide and exercising for at least 150 minutes a week.”

  • Measurable: Track your progress! Weigh yourself the same day each week and keep a log. This way, you can see those numbers go down and stay motivated.

  • Achievable: Be realistic. Following a balanced diet and adding a mix of cardio and strength training for 150 minutes a week will put you on track for success.

  • Relevant: Focus on why this matters to you—better health, more energy, improved fitness, and overall well-being. Keeping the "why" in mind can keep you going when the going gets tough.

  • Time-bound: Give yourself a deadline! In this case, 12 weeks. Having a finish line in sight can boost your focus and determination.

2. Find a Workout Buddy

Accountability can be a game changer. Find a friend who’s also into fitness (or wants to be!), and commit to regular workouts together. Whether it’s morning walks, gym sessions, or even virtual yoga, having someone waiting for you makes it much harder to skip. Plus, it’s more fun!

Pro tip: Challenge each other to hit that weekly 150 minutes of activity. You can even make it a friendly competition!

3. Get a Pro on Your Team

If you’ve been going at it alone and aren’t seeing the results you want, it might be time to bring in a pro. Hiring a personal coach can give you a tailored workout plan, accountability, and expert guidance—all designed to help you hit your goals faster. And it might not cost as much as you think!
