Myth Busting 101

Are you between the ages of 46 and 64?If so, you've probably heard some interesting things about exercising at your age. Maybe you’ve even done a little research yourself (and gotten scared off). I’m here to set the record straight — and bust a few myths wide open.

Before we dive in, a quick reminder: If you’re starting a new exercise program, it’s always smart to check in with your doctor first. Then, come back and try these simple, effective suggestions. It takes about a month to create a habit, but let’s start small:I challenge you to stick with it for just one week. You might be amazed at how you feel!

Myth #1: I’m too old to exercise.

Wrong! You are never too old to get moving.Even if you need to stay seated, you can build fitness right where you are. Try this:

  • Sit tall in a chair and march your legs up and down for two minutes.

  • Take a 30-second break.

  • Repeat!

If you’re more mobile, lace up those sneakers and head out for a 15-minute walk every day for a week. Bring a friend along — accountability makes it more fun, and you're less likely to skip a day!Not only will exercise boost your physical health, but your mental wellbeing will thank you, too.

Myth #2: I might fall and break a hip!

Here’s the truth: exercise actually helps you prevent falls.Building strength and improving your balance are some of the best ways to protect yourself. If you’re new to strength training, start simple:

  • Grab a pair of soup cans or water bottles.

  • Start with light lifting movements to ease in.

Want to take it up a notch? Your local dollar store usually has small hand weights — start with 2 or 3 pounds. And if you’re unsure where to begin, a certified personal trainer can design a safe, effective plan just for you.

Myth #3: I have a chronic illness — I shouldn’t exercise.

This is a common fear, but here’s the good news:Exercise can be adapted to your needs.

In fact, the right fitness program can sometimes lessen the impact of chronic conditions and improve your quality of life.An experienced trainer will work with your limitations and craft a plan that’s safe, effective, and empowering.

Myth #4: Exercise is boring!

If you think exercise means endless push-ups and crunches, no wonder you’re not excited!Exercise can be anything you enjoy:

  • Dancing

  • Golfing

  • Playing with your grandkids

  • Swimming

  • Hiking

If it gets you moving and brings you joy, it counts. And if you’d rather have someone lead the way, a fun, engaging trainer can make a world of difference.
